PROPS: You’ll need a blanket or two for the first pose, and, optionally, a wall for the second.

Four-Limb Staff Pose

Repeat 2 to 3 times

Chaturanga Dandasana (chaht-tour-ANG-ah don-DAHS-anna)

chaturanga = four limbs (chatur = four; anga = limb); danda = staff

The “four limbs” here refers to this pose’s four supports: the two hands and (the balls of the) two feet. The “staff” refers to the spine, the central support of the body (for more on the spine, see Staff Pose, page 74).

BENEFITS

Strengthens the arms, wrists, and front belly.

CAUTIONS

Avoid this pose if you have any serious shoulder or wrist injury.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF

Remove the blanket and perform the pose with your hands and knees serving as supports. Or try the full pose with your hands and the balls of your feet serving as supports. In these, lower your torso and legs to within a few inches of the floor. Be sure not to let the pelvis sag as you did on the blanket support; press your tail toward your pubis and firm your thighs, lifting them toward the ceiling.
